AFL training helps batsman to second century
CRICKET: Ben Heppell scored his second century in under two seasons to help Redbacks to a win against Allora in one of the highest scoring games of the Condamine Cup season on Saturday at Allora.
There were 605 runs scored in 80 overs, a rate even Chris Lynn and Ben Cutting from the Brisbane Heat who settle for in some games.
Heppell scored 113 as Redbacks beat Allora by 25 runs. He hit one six over square leg in a chanceless innings.
After moving from Victoria in 2013, Heppell now has his two highest scores in cricket and both in Warwick, 100 last season and 113 on Saturday.
"I like to hit the ball down the ground and hit two fours straight past the bowler,” Heppell said.
It caps an outstanding eight days for Heppell who hit 23 in the Warwick Davis Shield final win against Lockyer a weekend earlier.
"We needed six runs to win against Lockyer with six wickets in hand and I tried to win the game with one shot and was bowled,” he said.
He also played in last season's Davis Shield win so has two premiership wins from his only two seasons of representative cricket.
Heppell is coach of the Warwick Redbacks teams in AFL Darling Downs and admitted the training for footy has helped his fitness for cricket.
"I doubt if I would have made a century with my fitness level before I started footy training for the new season,” he said.
Andrew McConnell backed Heppell to hit 64 for Redbacks in a total of 7-325.
The Allora best with the bat were Blake Lollback who scored 50 and Tim Kajewski with 49.
The best bowler in the match was James Kurtz with 4-40 for Redbacks.
In the other game, Pat Gordon hit 68 and Mitch Bourke 60 for Maryvale Condamine while Damien Canning was the best batsman for Sovereign with 43.
The best bowler in the game was Maryvale medium pacer Paul Bourke with 3-5.
Maryvale scored 5-324 to win by 150 runs.
