Aldi to bring life back to quiet shopping complex
RESIDENTS on the northwestern flank of Toowoomba will be saved a drive into the CBD to buy groceries when a new Aldi store opens at the Bridge St Plaza later this year.
An Aldi spokeswoman said the company was in final negotiations to handover the property.
"At this stage, we do not have a confirmed date as to when the premises will be handed over, however we are hoping to commence fit out works over the next few months and are working towards an opening date in late 2019," she said.
The company selected the Bridge Street Plaza for its new store because of the growth potential in the surrounding suburbs.
Aldi is banking on a significant increase in population along the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing corridor.
"We work closely with local planning bodies such as councils, community groups and other businesses to ensure we positively impact the local area. We believe this store will service the western catchment of Toowoomba," the spokeswoman said.
The ALDI Bridge Street Plaza will look a little different to other Aldi stores, with redesigned shelving, expanded wooden produce bays and extended energy efficient chillers.
It will support 15-20 full-time and part-time staff.war
The Bridge St Plaza has struggled to attract shoppers after IGA pulled out in August 2016.
In June, 2017 Aldi announce to would move into the Torrington site in June 2017, but major work was needed to prepare the site for a larger supermarket.
