Batsmen need run of scores to make Test team

Howzat column with Michael Bourke

THE Australian one-day cricket side appears to be down on confidence after being beaten by South Africa this week.

After losing 16 out of their past 19 games in the 50-over format, the Aussie batsman lacked respect for the good ball against a classy South African bowling line-up featuring Dale Steyn.

With the modern T20 style taking the game by storm batters are being aggressive from the first ball they face. An approach with controlled aggression with a level of patience might produce a better result.

Shield ton ticket

IT SEEMS every Shield batsman this season who scores a century is in contention for a Test cap. This week we had Will Bosisto and Mitch Marsh from Western Australia score tons on a flat Allan Border Oval. A couple of back-to-back centuries are required as one Shield ton should not get you a ticket to the baggy green. Perhaps more spinning wickets need to be produced in Australia as half the away games are played on turning pitches in Asia.
