Burge brothers plot their hockey paths

HOCKEY: Spectators at Clyde Park would’ve been forgiven for doing a double take in a recent COVID Cup encounter.

Twins Tom and Matt Burge shared a special moment, with the brothers lining up for Red Lion and Norths respectively.

To add to the moment, younger brother Daniel was goalkeeper for Red Lion as well, with sister Abby also taking her place for the club in the women’s COVID Cup.

Still just 16-years-old, Daniel is enjoying his first season of A-grade, and said it was something he has looked forward to.

“There was a bit of brotherly rivalry there,” Daniel said.

“I’ve been training with the A-grade team for a few years so it has made it easier for me. My brothers have given me plenty of support.”

Matt was previously a member of Red Lion, before making the switch to Norths for the new season, a player coach Kris Glass was happy to have on board.

“He wasn’t getting an opportunity in their top grade side, and we had a spot there so we gave him the chance to come across,” Glass said.

‘He’s been a great asset so far. He’s a very talented player and enjoys the challenge at the back.”

The trio last shared a pitch almost a decade ago when playing in the U11s of Red Lion.

Daniel played up various age groups to play with his older brothers.

Red Lion will enjoy a bye in tonight’s COVID Cup fixtures, with Norths taking on Newtown.

Rangeville and Past High will also come together, pitting the two undefeated sides against each other.
