Fiji PM vows country will recover after Winston's wrath

FIJI'S Prime Minister, Frank Bainimarama, has vowed his country will bounce back from the destruction wrought by Cyclone Winston last Saturday.

After touring some of the country's devastated areas and reassuring residents, Mr Bainimarama expressed shock at the level of damage.

"Think of what the Fiji Government has put into infrastructure in the last 30 to 40 years - that has gone when Winston came around," he told the ABC.

"We need to put that back online. It will take a while, but as I said we'll get back on our feet. We need to, we have to, there's no other option."

With four Australian Army helicopters deployed to Fiji, the first of those was set to take part in the relief efforts yesterday.

HMAS Canberra is expected to arrive next week, as is New Zealand's HMNZS Canterbury.

The death toll from the category five storm stood at 42 yesterday, but there were fears that figure could rise.
