Four medals for team at state boxing tournament
BOXING: Warwick Boxing Club member Felicity Parsons has won her first state title in the 54kg division.
Parsons was a gold medallist at the Queensland Golden Gloves Championships when she won an unanimous points decision in the final against a boxer from Hervey Bay.
"Felicity put a count on her opponent in the second round,” trainer Damien Lawler said.
Jake Wyllie took his win/loss record to 33/6 at the championships when he won in the 64kg division.
Wyllie is currently in heavy training for a tour to Germany with an Australian boxing team.
He will compete in Berlin, Hamburg and Munich.
"I started my preparation for Germany three months ago and I am fit and healthy,” Wyllie said.
He travelled to Brisbane to watch Brisbane boxer Jeff Horn win a world title last year and said meeting Horn during a visit to Warwick really inspired him.
"Jeff started where I started in boxing and look what he has achieved,” Wyllie said.
Eleven-year-old club member Holly Morrison won two silver medals at the golden gloves.
Warwick boxer Nick Dwan, 19, was in a field of 10 boxers in the 75kg division and won his first round bout against a boxer from Sydney before losing in a split points decision.
"I have had four fights and my boxing at the state championships was my best so far,” he said.
"I want to go as far as I can in the sport and am keen to box professionally one day,” Nick said.
Bethany McMahon travelled to Brisbane for the golden gloves but wasn't matched.
She started training at the Warwick Boxing Club 18 months ago and is waiting to be matched for her first fight.
"I joined the boxing club for fitness and fell in love with the sport,” she said.
