ATHLETICS: Twenty-eight students from the Southern Downs and Border areas will head to the Queensland School Sport Track and Field Championships for 13-19 years athletics at the Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre starting Thursday.

The Warwick State High School has the most athletes from the area, 12.

The team has four captains, including two from Warwick High, boy's field captain Justyn Rogers and girls' track captain Nat Webb.

Rogers is in four events, the most of any athlete from the Southern Downs and Border areas.

At Southern Downs and Darling Downs championships, he went for a jump to break long-standing high jump records so looks a good chance for a medal at state level. He goes into the championships with a personal best of 1.9m.

He is in the 100m and relay Thursday, long and high jumps on Friday and the triple jump on Saturday.

Webb has returned from injury to compete in the 100m, 200m and a relay.

Four of the Darling Downs team members nominated in three events are Alexis Carey, Zac Caterson, Lily Maw and Lucy Mantova. Some will also compete in a relay. Caterson has won numerous state and national medals in the past.

Bec Rogers coaches some of the athletes and said many would be aiming to make the Queensland team to compete in the nationals in Adelaide in December.

The state championships go to Sunday.
