Listen up! Elf earring class in Killarney festival line-up
KILLARNEY artists want to share their love of crafts and creativity with all who visit the Killarney Art Gallery during Jumpers and Jazz.
The gallery will host four craft workshops during the second week of the festival, three of which will be jewellery workshops conducted by local crafty lady, Kathy McPhail.
Fitting with the quirkiness of Jumpers and Jazz, Miss McPhail will guide students through making cabochons, elf ear earrings and leather and wire woven jewellery.
Owner of the gallery Marie Mikkelsen will be running the fourth workshop, where participants will find their spirit animal and make them into a mask.
She said the workshops would provide people with skills they can use for the rest of their lives.
"With the cabochon workshop, people will be able to find a lovely stone on the beach and have the skills to make it into a pendant for their necklace,” she said.
The workshops are suited to all skill levels and the gallery provides a kit people can take home and continue developing their skills with.
"I was teaching Alison Reseck how to make a necklace and she got so frustrated she threw it on on the floor,” she said.
"But she took it home with her and kept at it, now she is crafting things all the time.”
Ms Mikkelsen said the gallery is just as much about creating connections with people as it is a commercial venture.
"We have a good gang here and for a lot of people it has become a meeting place,” she said.
"It is good for their mental health.”
The workshops will run on Wednesday, July 24, and Thursday, July 25.
On Wednesday elf ears workshop will run from 9.30am-12.30pm, then the animal masks from 1pm-4pm.
On Thursday the leather and wire woven jewellery workshop will run from 9.30am-12.30pm, then the cabochons from 1pm-4pm.
