Local butcher brings home first place from Sydney
A LOCAL butcher has taken out the top spot at a national skills-based competition in Sydney.
Steve Turnbull who works for Carey Bros butcher has claimed first place at the World Skills national championship.
The 23-year-old competed in a three day retail butcher competition, challenging his skill set in carcass break up, trimming and slicing and displaying for sale.
It was a tough weekend for the young butcher he said.
"The first day was the most stressful, we had the trunk of pork contest which was the hardest.
"I felt a lot more comfortable on the second day when we worked with lamb,” he said.
Mr Turnbull was up against six other competitors from across the nation.
The Carey Bros butcher wasn't expecting to win first place.
"Stoked, couldn't believe it, didn't think I was in with that much of a chance,” Mr Turnbull said.
The young butcher had the quickest time in the speed sausage filling and plating challenge. Finishing at one minute and 20 seconds.
The Sydney trip was a learning experience for Mr Turnbull, having the opportunity to see a range of different skill sets and techniques from the competitors.
Mr Turnbull said he's happy to be returning to work on Locke St with a first place medal around he's neck.
