Mustangs find form to down the Capras
RUGBY LEAGUE: The Western Mustangs have finished the Mal Meninga Cup season on a high, downing the Central Queensland Capras 32-26 in Emerald.
In the last match of the six-round state-wide competition, the victory moves the Mustangs into 11th, a win behind Townsville and Norths in sixth and seventh respectively.
In a game of scoring runs, the Mustangs bounced back from a second minute try to the Capras, getting into their work and opening up a 22-18 half-time lead.
Jordan Lipp crossed just minutes into the second half to stretch the lead to 10, before two Capras tries had the home side within two heading into the final 20 minutes.
Determined not to let another lead slip, the Mustangs recovered from the setback, and crossed again through centre Joel Brett to again lead by a converted try.
They managed to hold out Central Queensland for the final 15 minutes, securing their second win of the season.
The U20s didn't have the same fortunes in their Hastings Deering Colts game against the Capras, going down 40-16 as they continue to search for their first win of the season.
Central Queensland stamped their authority early on, putting on two quick tries to lead 12-0 after as many minutes.
Despite the slow start, the side kept their heads high, and hit back with two tries of their own in quick succession through Austin Jennings and Benji Neliman to bring the score back to 12-10.
A pair of Capras four-pointers in the final five minutes of the half cruelled the Mustangs, as they found themselves trailing by 12 at the break.
Three tries after the break put the result beyond doubt early in the second half, before Jennings brought up his double close the end.
The Mustangs next play the Burleigh Bears at Pizzey Park on ANZAC Day.
