New tapas restaurant takes off

STANTHORPE diners are hungry for adventurous flavours if the crowds at a new Brazilian tapas restaurant are anything to go by.

Emma and Renato Fraguas have been offering tapas at Honeysuckle Cottages as an experiment over winter.

On Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, Renato has been firing up the Brazilian grill to barbecue meats in his home country's traditional style.

With the help of his visiting brother, he also serves up flavoursome vegetable dishes of mushrooms, fried banana, halloumi and other favourites.

Emma said the response from Stanthorpe locals had been unexpected, with the restaurant quickly filling up by people drinking and eating by the fire.

"I'm surprised how quickly it has taken off,” Emma said.

"It was something we started for the guests (of Honeysuckle Cottages) but it's booked most nights with locals.”

Emma said Brazilian tapas was similar to the Spanish version in that servings were "bite-sized” which allowed diners to try a range of foods.

The barbecue steak, known as picanha - which uses the cap of the rump - is cooked over an open flame with salt and served in mouth-sized morsels with a salsa and ground dip.

Other favourites are pork belly and crumbed chicken pieces called frango milanesa, while those who are more daring can try chicken heart skewers.

Dishes range from $5 to $15. Diners spend about $30 on average for a variety of foods and a Brazilian cocktail.

Emma said the winter tapas experiment had been so successful they were bound to try it again next year.
