NEWSAGENT WEEK: Meet two brothers in the game for 30 years

IN THE 30-plus years brothers Paul and Peter Hynes have been selling newspapers and scanning lottery tickets for Warwick, they have seen a lot of changes.

Today is the final day of National Newsagent Week, an initiative which focuses on the contribution such businesses as Hynes Newsagency make to their communities.

Peter said the rise of the digital age had a huge impact on their business but the key to survival was to stay versatile.

"We have brought in different kinds of products over the years like gifts and the lotto, it is all about diversity now.”

While the digital shift has forced the business to evolve, Paul said the hard-working ethos of the siblings remained as strong as ever.

"Everyday I am here at 3am to greet the guys delivering the paper and we only get two days off a year - Christmas and Good Friday” he said.

Despite some setbacks, the brothers said newagencies still played an important role in the community.

"We have always been about service with a smile and it is our good service which has given us such a loyal customer base,” Peter said.

"Every Saturday morning we have eight people lining up out the front waiting for us to open and I could tell you each of their names.”
