Paralympian speaks at sport and recreation forum
SPORT: Dual Paralympic medallist Carlee Beattie was keen to pay tribute to the volunteers before addressing a Southern Downs Regional Council Sport and Recreation Forum at the Warwick Town Hall yesterday.
"I played hockey and netball in Warwick and it was great the way everyone helped me adapt and modify my style to play with one hand,” Beattie said.
"People in Warwick encouraged me and gave me a lot of confidence,” she said.
"I would never have achieved what I have in sport except for the support from Warwick.”
She mentioned five individuals who played a major part in assisting her, Vicki Plummer, Fiona Hayes and Karyn Byrne (netball), Sheryl Windle and Rob Pohlman (hockey).
Club representatives Tricia Chant (Leyburn Sprints), Col Britton (Stanthorpe Sports Association), Neil Burtenshaw (Pentath-run) and Cody Walker (Warwick Gymnastic Club) spoke at the forum about their involvement with their clubs.
Britton is involved with the Stanthorpe Sports Association which oversees the facilities in McGlew St and some other sports facilities at Stanthorpe.
"We have had a lot of success with applying for funding,” he said.
The forum was the second held in the region and was attended by 50 representatives of sports clubs and associations.
