A DARLING Downs poultry farm will undergo a massive expansion under new owners, if the plan is approved by the Toowoomba Regional Council.
Farm Pride Foods Ptd put forward the proposal yesterday to expand the property and facilities on Tummaville Rd in Pittsworth to cater for nearly 400,000 birds, up from the current estimated 60,000-bird operation.
The Victorian-based company, which took over from previous owner Clearmedal Pty Ltd after it went into liquidation, would refurbish the six laying sheds and add another two as part of a four-year expansion.
"As part of the decision to purchase, we want to complete the works contemplated by the approved application so that we can improve the farming operation and make it more efficient," applicant Malcolm Ward wrote.
"We initially understood the six egg production sheds were fully operational, but we have recently identified the current state of the equipment in the six egg production sheds, due to lack of maintenance, will require they all be refurbished.
"We are currently removing all the production equipment for four to six sheds and will do the same with the remaining two sheds once the current batches of chickens are due for retirement.
"We are targeting the complete refurbishment of a shed every four months and expect to commence this process early in 2018."
Clearmedal Pty Ltd was placed in administration in June and was liquidated just four days ago.
The 1.8-hectare property was put up for sale in July and August, before being sold to Farm Pride Foods on November 7.
The DA is under assessment with the council.
