Rare sale trip to sell roosters
IN FOR a rare trip to the Warwick Pig and Calf Sale was Yangan hobby farmer Clare Batterham.
Mrs Batterham, a long-time resident of the area, said she had come to town to sell a few roosters.
"I pretty much gave them away,” she said.
"The price I got was barely worth the trip in, but they were pretty ordinary roosters.
"They're second crosses from the purebred poultry I breed, so they came to the sale.”
Mrs Batterham said she took her poultry to shows when she had the time.
"It takes a lot of work to get them ready for something like that, so I don't do it very often,” she said.
As well as poultry Mrs Batterham raises ewes and lambs for supplementary income.
"I can make a little on them, if the wild dogs don't get to them first,” she said.
"It's been a terrible problem in the Yangan area for a long, long time.
"It's very distressing to find your animals slaughtered in the paddock and a lot of work goes into making sure it doesn't happen.
" It happens to everyone, not just me and I'm really hoping the council can do something about it.”
