'Sad news': Cafe favourite forced to close

EIGHT months after swinging open the doors of Back Creek Estate Cafe, George and Claudia Shepherd have had to swing them closed again.

The couple took to social media to announce that they would be shutting the Severnlea cafe 'until further notice'.

"We would like to thank everyone that has supported us over the last 8 months," the post reads.

"However, due to the current environmental conditions we will be closed until further notice."

The couple bought the business in September 2018 and spent several months transforming the cafe into a modern establishment among the picturesque gardens of the estate.

They opened for their first day of trade on Australia Day.

The pair hail from the small town of Bellingen, near Coffs Harbour, and decided to look for a sea change. Initially they moved to Hervey Bay, where they fell in love with Queensland, but not its humidity.

"I wanted somewhere where you had seasons, so colder months," Mrs Shepherd said at the time of their opening.

People reacted to the news with disappointment.

"Really saddened to hear that. You accommodated and treated us like royalty," Tom Hilton said.

"Sad news about our latest holiday find," Sally Lane said. "Hopefully things turn around real quick and your up and running again before you know it," another commenter shared.

The Border Post contacted the couple for comment but they declined to comment at this time.
