SEVEN teams played in the annual Cardinal Cup Aussie rules pre-season competition at Warwick Credit Union Oval on the weekend.

The carnival started well for Warwick with a win against Jimboomba Redbacks. After going down in last year's division 1 grand final, Goondiwindi started 2018 with a win in the men's competition with South Toowoomba runners-up.

Goondiwindi coach David O'Toole said the toughest game for his men was on Sunday morning against Jimboomba.

"It was an even competition and a great opportunity to have practice games before the season,” he said.

He welcomed the return of Warwick to the same division as Goondiwindi after Goondiwindi lost the division 1 grand final last year and Warwick lost the division 2 grand final. All teams are in one division this season.

"It was pretty tough on Warwick when we played them on Saturday afternoon, Warwick was playing their fourth game for the day and we were only playing our third,” O'Toole said.

A women's competition was played for the first time and Ipswich Eagles were the winners. Goondiwindi will host the 2019 cup.
