Senior star returning to speak 10 years after major win

SPORTS AWARDS: Ten years after winning the Daily News/Warwick Credit Union Senior Sports Star of the Year award, Delissa Kimmince will return home as guest speaker at the March 18 dinner.

Kimmince debuted for Australia against New Zealand in cricket in 2007 before having some time off and then returning in English County Cricket and for the Queensland Fire and Brisbane Heat.

She became captain of the Heat when it was founded in 2015, before stepping down in 2017.

Kimmince started as a pace bowler but in the second phase of her career became a recognised all-rounder and won a player-of-the-final award in T20 after opening the batting for Queensland in Perth.

In the past two seasons her bowling in T20 has been outstanding, resulting in her return to the Australian team.

She was part of the squad that won the Ashes in late 2017.The 29-year-old has won two T20 finals - with the Queensland Fire, and the Heat in the Big Bash League.

It all started for Kimmince when Ian Rathmell had a girl's cricket squad at the Warwick Central State School ground.

Her father, Peter, then coached her at Warwick, where Mark Steketee was in one of the squads.

He has gone on to play for the Queensland Bulls, the Heat and the Cricket Australia XI.

Kimmince was a junior sports star monthly winner in 2004 and a senior monthly winner in 2007 and 2008. She won the overall 2008 senior award.

Tickets for the dinner are for sale at the Daily News, 56 Kenilworth St, for $30, and $26 for high school students. Phone 46601355. With junior and senior winners to be honoured at the one dinner for the first time, tickets will be sold on a first-in, first-served basis.
