Serious allegations giving racing a black eye at wrong time

HORSE RACING: Explosive claims brought to light by the Herald Sun have made headlines this week for all the wrong reasons.

Text messages discovered allegedly implicated trainer Robert Smerdon and stablehand Greg Nelligan exchanging texts on doping of horses.

As we head into one of the more exciting autumn carnivals in recent memory, this is a black eye that the sport doesn't need.

Back to the track, and the Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes headlines a huge weekend of racing where the juveniles of the country take centre stage.

The Silver Slipper Stakes at Rosehill Gardens might only have seven runners, but it is not short of talent.

Magic Millions winner Sunlight returns after a strong victory at the Gold Coast, Neutrality looks to build on his debut demolition, and Estijaab looks to push her Golden Slipper claims.

That's without mentioning the talented Gongs, and unbeaten runners Sizzling Belle and Zousain.

CHARITY BETS OF THE WEEK

Two duck eggs last week didn't help our chosen charities.

SEAN TEUMA (SOUTHERN DOWNS SUICIDE PREVENTION) - PIERATA (ROSEHILL RACE 7 NO 4)

The Hobartville Stakes is the best race on a stacked Rosehill card, which means you're getting tremendous value about gun horses. Pierata has been beating up rivals this preparation, and with decent each-way odds about the Magic Millions winner, I'll be more than happy to have something on him. He has a strong sprint, and can run over the top of a good field.

NICK INMON (BUSHKIDS) - SUPPLY AND DEMAND (ROSEHILL RACE 6 NO 1)

Been waiting for this fella to get beyond the mile as he has been carrying the grandstand in his last starts over the shorter trip. Last campaign he managed to string four in a row including the Grafton Cup, Caloundra Cup, Eremein handicap and the Kensei handicap once he started past 1800m. Should be in the first couple and should be too good.
