Success for football academy on Southern Downs
FOOTBALL: The Southern Downs Football Academy is proving hard work and commitment to football training is paying off.
Head coach Tim Gaske said as the largest regional Queensland academy, 29 players had made a mix of representative and National Premier League teams.
"We are a supportive academy in providing training for all kids (aged 4-17) of any ability with the opportunity to learn and master skills,” he said.
"The proof is in the pudding with so many of our academy making their way into representative teams.
"Not only the players, five of our coaches have taken up spots in representative teams as coaches and assistant coaches.
"In September this year, we will be taking teams to Hervey Bay for the Joeys Mini World Cup for possible selection for a tour of Germany.”
Gaske said SDFA was all about being a professional training provider.
"We want to develop football skills as well as personal development,” he said.
"It's all about providing a pathway for the kids to whatever level they want to get to.
"Our aim is to hopefully train a future A-League or international star.”
Away from training and football, SDFA members have also been busy volunteering at the recent Killarney Picnic Basket Day and the Polocrosse World Cup.
Gaske said it was great to get out and be a part of these community events.
"We meet so many new people and get our brand seen. After all the successes of late, the SDFA are offering a two-week free trial for ages 4-13,” he said.
"We have many supporters and people in the wider football community who are really taking notice of what we are providing.”
SDFA has teams playing in Toowoomba under-11, under-13 (mostly 12-year-olds), under-15 and under-17 competitions.
The under-17 team is in the top two and the three younger teams are undefeated.
