Two late tries secure win for the Warriors

RUGBY LEAGUE: Two tries in the last 10 minutes of the game has enabled the Wattles Warriors to take the undisputed lead in the Toowoomba Rugby League A-grade competition.

Going into the round, Wattles and Warwick were equal first but the Cowboys lost to Brothers and Wattles beat Goondiwindi 30-18 at Platz Oval to move to 12 competition points. Warwick are second on 10 points and Valleys have nine.

With 13 minutes to go at Platz Oval, the score was 18-all but winger Braydon Wilson scored tries in the 78th and 80th minutes for the win. Coach Travis Burns converted both tries.

The battle is definitely on for spots in the Madsen Rasmussen Trophy final between the A-grade leaders at the end of the first round (after 11 weeks of footy).

Warwick play Valleys in Warwick on a Saturday night in their last game of the first round on June15, a game which could decide at least one finalist. Wattles play Oakey on June16 in a game the Warriors should win.

In reserve grade, Wattles won 32-16 against Goondiwindi.

Wattles went down 30-24 to Goondiwindi in the under-18 game.

This weekend, Wattles are away to Gatton.

SCORES: A-grade: Wattles 30 (Braydon Wilson 3, Michael Marshall 2 tries, Travis Burns 5 goals) d Goondiwindi 18 (Tom Davis, Jason Saunders, David McGrady, Malcolm McGrady tries, Kerrod Sampson goal)
