Umpire shoots for nationals
LINDA Bunch is on target to umpire at her first nationals after securing her national C badge.
The Warwick Netball Association secretary and Doorslammers A-grade goal shooter is one of only two national C badge holders in Warwick.
"My aim is to continue to build on what I have learnt through gaining the badge and to share that knowledge with up-and-coming umpires in Warwick," Bunch said.
"I am now eligible to umpire at state carnivals."
After a year as a national C badge umpire, Bunch can move towards achieving her B badge.
"I will need to be coached, mentored and then have my performances screened in higher level games to obtain B level," she said.
"My aim is to be the best umpire I can at whatever level of the game I officiate."
Bunch said it was important that umpires officiated at an intensity in line with the standard of play.
"Naturally, you are not going to umpire 10 year olds at the same intensity as A-grade in Warwick," she said.
"You explain more about the rules to a junior than seniors."
Bunch said by helping the players understand the rules, umpires make the game more enjoyable.
She plans to umpire in A, B and C grades on Monday and Tuesday nights at WIRAC, some Saturday junior fixtures, at Darling Downs Inter-district level and at some state carnivals. Away from the whistle and shooting goals, Bunch is hoping for an influx of team nominations from opening day on Monday.
Individual nominations are also needed for senior fixtures to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Junior sign on is on February 15 at Rose City Shoppingworld for girls, aged five to 14.
