Warwick player up with best in state in squash

SQUASH: Warwick Rose Squash Club member Cameron Darton is consistently in the top-10 in Queensland and one of a number of promising players in squash fixtures on Tuesday and Wednesday nights at the St Mary's courts.

Darton placed 14th in a field of 36 in the under-17 division in the Australian Junior Squash Open in Darwin earlier this year. He came up against a field of competitors from Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, New Caledonia and PNG.

He has been ranked as high as No.1 in his age group in Queensland and has consistently been in the top 10.

Squash rankings change regularly after tournaments around the state. Darton plays an average once a month in an away tournament.

Former Warwick player Caleb Johnson, who currently plays in Brisbane, was fourth in the U19 division in Darwin. His brother Sebastian has also played high level squash. The Johnson brothers and Darton have played for the Southern Region in representative squash.

There are plenty more squash players coming through the Warwick ranks with Cameron Darton (SOTE), Sean Bryson (Assumption) and Mitch Lyons (Warwick High) selected in the Darling Downs team to play in the state school championships in Rockhampton in May.

Coaching available

THE Warwick Rose Squash Club is keen to encourage players to head to the Toowoomba Development Day on Sunday.

Squash official Jenny Gillott said anyone looking for a new and vibrant sporting life was welcome to join the Warwick Rose Squash Club and participate in the Toowoomba Development Day.

"Master squash coach Robyn Prentice will be in charge of the development day,” Gillott said.

"Travel, lunch and session fees on Sunday will be subsidised by Warwick Rose Squash Club.”
