WHEN Sharon Edmunds lost her partner to lung cancer this year she promised herself that his memory would live on.

Determined to make a difference in the lives of others touched by the disease, Ms Edmunds will lace up and take part in this year's Southern Downs Relay For Life, held September 12-13 at Redbacks AFC Oval.

"My partner Joe lost his cancer battle in April and we wanted to do something as a family to remember him by," Ms Edmunds said.

"Relay For Life seemed like the perfect way to do that - we get to honour Joe and we're making a difference in the fight against cancer in the hope that another family won't have to go through what we have."

Ms Edmunds has put together a Relay team, In Joe's Honour, which will see more than 15 family and friends, donning the colour purple and walking with a purpose.

"Relay For Life is such a wonderful event, it really makes a difference and supports people in the local community struggling with this terrible disease," she said.

"I would encourage all locals to come along and show their support this weekend - you've got nothing to lose and families like mine have everything to gain."

Cancer Council Queensland Relay For Life co-ordinator Shona Gibson said Relay For Life was a heart-warming and emotional time as individuals come together to give hope to Queenslanders touched by cancer.

"Relay is about celebrating survivors, remembering loved ones lost and fighting back against cancer - it's a wonderful event to be involved in," Ms Gibson said.

"Each year the community band together to fight back against cancer and we are calling on locals to come together again in 2015, to show their support and strength for Queenslanders impacted by the disease."
