Wattles aiming to end a Barrett Shield drought in footy game

RUGBY LEAGUE: Wattles coach Travis Burns wants to end the recent Warwick Cowboys supremacy in the Barrett Shield which starts at 6.30pm Saturday at Father Ranger Oval.

A-grade will be the fifth of five games starting at 12.45pm.

"We haven't won the Barrett Shield since 2014 so want to change the trend in this year's game,” he said.

"This game is a great opportunity for our younger players like Joe Morris, Nick Van Der Poel, Blake Lollback, Mitch Duff and Jake Hargreaves to impress.”

Burns said Joe Morris had got first chance at starting hooker.

"The opportunity is there for Joe to consolidate his position at hooker in A grade,” Burns said.

"I am looking forward to seeing new player, Michael Marshall, at fullback.”

Cowboys coach Matt Grew said the game was a chance to build a few combinations going into the first fixture game.

"We have trained really well this week,” Grew said.

"I am looking to captain Mick Bloomfield, hooker Ben Sullivan and lock Sam Broomhall to step up in the game against Wattles.”

Grew has only named three on the bench and will add additional players from the reserve-grade side.

"There are positions available on the bench in the Barrett Shield for three or four players from reserve grade,” he said.

The one absentee from the Cowboys side is second rower Matt Marshall, who is resting a sore back.

"I am still hopeful prop Darren Pettiford will return to the field in 2019. His size, experience and knowledge of the game is important to the Cowboys,” Grew said.
