Wattles primed for top-of-table clash at Clifton
RUGBY LEAGUE: To cap off a near 12- hour gala rugby league event at Platz Oval on Saturday, the Wattles top-grade side will run on in arguably their biggest challenge of the season so far against Toowoomba Rugby League Hutchies Cup premiership leaders Valleys Roosters.
The clash between the top-of-the-table heavyweights will decide the A-grade minor premiership.
Wattles junior and senior clubs have come together to host a Super Saturday of footy for their last home games of 2019.
A-grade player/coach Travis Burns is looking to bestthe ladder leaders to cap off the gala day that starts at 8.30am today with under-7 and U8 games to open the juniors program against Warwick Eastern Suburbs.
The A-grade outfit sits second on the ladder, a solitary point behind Valleys, and last Saturday racked up its sixth win on the trot, a 58-6 domination of the Danes at Club Pittsworth.
Saturday evening's main game against the full-strength Roosters is a significant hurdle with only two fixtures remaining before the finals series kicks off in this 100th season of the TRL.
Burns has his side aiming at zero losses coming in to the finals as they face Valleys on Saturday and Goondiwindi next week before easing into the business end of the season.
The Warriors will run on at near full strength, with injured front-rower and co-skipper Dale Perkins a glaring omission.
While Perkins is a significant loss, Burns feels he has the necessary engine room strength, particularly with big men of the calibre of Mitchell Duff, Dylan Wilson and Michael Pearson in fine form.
"We also have back-rower Mitch Koina and regional Queensland representative centre Nick Van Der Poel returning,” Burns said.
Kick off: U18s - 4pm Saturday; reserve grade - 5.30pm; A grade - 7pm.
