Wattles prop rues mistakes in the preliminary final in TRL

RUGBY LEAGUE: Wattles prop Mitchell Duff was philosophical after the 47-28 loss to Valleys in the TRL preliminary final at Clive Berghofer Stadium on Sunday.

"It was very disappointing but that's footy,” he said.

"I don't think Valleys were better than us, we just beat ourselves with a few errors.”

It was the second A-grade finals series for Duff who was part of the Wattles team which lost to Valleys in the last two minutes of the 2018 gand final.

"It is disappointing, we were also so close last year,” he said.

"We should have won the minor premiership and to go from there to not making the grand final was disappointing.

As a prop, Duff plays about 60 minutes most TRL games.

He wants a good off-season and then to find form at the start of the 2020 season and push for a position in the Toowoomba Clydesdales.

"I have improved the most with my fitness,” he said.

"I now do a lot more training at home, running and weights, which has helped my football.

"I focus on anything that can build a bit of endurance.”

Duff will watch the grand final on Sunday afternoon at Clive Berghofer Stadium.

"It would be nice to see Warwick win and I think they will want it a bit more than Valleys,” he said.

"My tip for player of the grand final is Warwick winger Mitch Watson.”

Valleys led 12-0 early on Sunday before Andrew Richardson knocked back a Matt Duggan bomb for Matt Richards to find winger Braydon Wilson for the first Wattles try.

Just before half-time, Denzel Burns dropped a Travis Burns kick for Richardson to pass to Ty Gardner for a try. Up 22-18 at halftime, Wattles conceded a try to Ben Cook after three minutes of the second half. Wattles fought back but Valleys scored two tries to lead 40-28 with 12 minutes to play.

The last Valleys try was scored by Jason Sharpe in the 74th minute and a field goal by Gerome Burns put the game well out of Wattles' range at 47-28. Valleys will now go for back-to-back grand final wins.

Valleys 47 (Gerome Burns 2, Hnaloan Budden, Denzel Burns, Ben Cook, Dexter Buchanan, Dylan Chown, Jason Sharpe tries; Dwayne Duncan 7, Gerome Burns field goal) d Wattles 28 (Braydon Wilson, Michael Marshall, Mitch Bourke, Ty Gardner, Andrew Richardson tries; Matt Duggan four goals).
