Why the Yangan abattoir protesters haven't been charged

VEGAN activists who chained themselves to kill floor machinery at Carey Bros Yangan abattoir have not been charged with any trespassing offences at this stage.

Warwick Police Senior Sergeant Jamie Deacon said his officers require an official complaint from the property owner before charges can be laid.

"It is the wishes of the landowner to not make any complaint," Sgt Deacon said.

This applies to both the pre-dawn protest on Monday and the incident six weeks earlier when activists entered the abattoir to plant a hidden camera on the kill floor.

Police across the Southern Downs were alerted to the activists moving into the area at about 1.30am on Friday.

Additional officers were called up to assist.

The Yangan abattoir owner, Grey Carey, was contacted for comment but had not responded by time of publication.
