Year 7 student makes it into top Warwick High team

NETBALL: The Eastwell sisters from Warwick State High School were one of the sibling groups playing in the first day of Broncos Cup netball for students in years 7-10 at Scots PGC College on Wednesday.

With work on a $596,000 upgrading at Barnes Park underway, the netball was played on two different complexes at Scots PGC College.

While the Eastwell sisters, Bessie (Year 7) and Bridget (Year 10) play inter-district netball for Warwick in different teams, they were playing together for the first time in the top Warwick High netball team.

Coach Ian Rowling said Bessie was the only Year 7 player in the top team.

The team has been training at lunchtime and training will continue in the run up to the trip to Goondiwindi for more round games and the finals on June 12.

"The senior girls at Warwick High have been helping with our training,” Rowling said.

Bessie mainly plays centre which was her position on Wednesday but doesn't mind a game or two at wing attack.

"It is a great honour to play with the older girls. Bridget and I know each other's game pretty well so we combine a bit for Warwick High,” she said.

Bessie first played regional netball for a Darling Downs 10-12 years' team two years ago and said she was keen to play more regional netball.

Bridget plays goal attack which allows her to shoot some goals and also plays at wing attack.

"I have been in Warwick High teams for the Broncos Cup since Year 7,” she said.

"It is pretty good to be able to play a full day of netball.”

Bessie said she was keen to get to Goondiwindi for the next day of netball in a fortnight.

"Stanthorpe State High School was our toughest team on the first day,” she said.

The team won three of its first four games and came out on top by three in a game against Assumption College.

"I know most of the girls in the Assumption team,” Bessie said.
